FIRST LIGHTS – BUUNGBAA-MA-NDHU
BY KIRLI SAUNDERS AND FREEMANTLE BIENNALE
Award-winning Gundungurra-raised Gunai Writer and Artist, Kirli Saunders (OAM), energies mugaru (cold winter) with her synchronous installation of language and light, Buungbaa-mandhu meaning rise (as the sun), all of you.
Remnant of a bedtime story told around the campfire, Saunders’ poetic bi-lingual digital work rouses audiences to collaborate and create a powerful future together, ‘to rise, like light from the fire, mountain top…whirlwind, diamond python, black cockatoo.’
Conjured with welcome dance from local First Nations families and community, Ngununggula and Fremantle Biennale presents FIRST LIGHTS, a choreographed and responsive drone show.
HEADLINE ACT: SHEBA WILLIAMS
Sheba Williams is a one a kind performer and emcee who can really ‘bring the party” to any style of event in a number of incredibly fun, stylish and charismatic ways!

MONSTER MAGIC: A special artmaking and performance workshop with local artist Lily Cummins that engages children in costume making and offers the opportunity to participate in the BURNING MAN celebrations.

Burning Man will be resurrected and ignited once again. Follow the Oxley College bagpipes players (and the monsters) to purge your winter sins and rejoice in the heat of our winter sacrifice.
HEADLINE MUSIC ACT: ELECTRIC FIELDS
Multi-award winning Electric Fields create a striking and haunting merging of living traditional culture with electronic music, bringing breathtaking beauty and power to the stage. Featuring the extraordinary voice of Zaachariaha Fielding, and the brilliance of producer Michael Ross, their music ranges from soulful pop to epic-scale electronic works.
ALL TOGETHER NOW
An action-packed day of family and children’s activities. Meet Piccolo the Unicorn, who will do a variety of tricks and can also paint! Participate in artmaking workshops and collaborative artworks with local artists, Ric Abel, Rosa Fedele, and Yvette Tziallas. We also have a special performance by local school students who have come together especially for MIDWINTER FESTIVAL.

Throughout the entire festival, we present SAVOUR THE HIGHLANDS in partnership with GROW Southern Highlands, a bespoke food and wine market featuring some of the best local restaurants, makers, and producers.
